Successful  Kick-Off of DEPLOYTOUR: Building a Common Tourism Data Space for Europe

In November, the picturesque island of Mallorca hosted by our project coordinator, AnySolution, became the backdrop for the launch of DEPLOYTOUR, currently Europe’s most consequent project for Tourism set to transform this sector through data innovation. Held in Palma, the kick-off meeting brought together a diverse group of stakeholders from 43 partners spanning 13 countries. This gathering marked the start of an ambitious journey to establish the basis of a Common European Tourism Data Space, unlocking the potential of shared data for a more personalized, sustainable, and competitive tourism ecosystem.

Uniting Minds Across Europe: A Collaborative Spirit

The kick-off meeting wasn’t just a formal start; it was an opportunity to connect diverse expertise and cultures. Representatives from national ministries, SMEs, tourism companies, research institutions, and data experts came together to align their visions for the next three years.
For many attendees, the highlight was the opportunity to exchange ideas and learn from one another, demonstrating how collaboration across sectors and countries can foster innovation. Discussions revealed a shared determination to tackle industry challenges, from fragmented data to environmental concerns, by leveraging state-of-the-art technologies like data spaces or AI.
A recurring theme during the sessions was the need to overcome long-standing barriers in the tourism sector, such as:

  • Data silos: Stakeholders often operate in isolation, limiting the potential of shared insights.
  • Lack of trust: Fear of data misuse or monetization has hindered collaboration.
  • Digital Transition: Different countries and regions have varying levels of maturity in terms of data and the use of digital solutions.

DEPLOYTOUR aims to create a trusted, decentralized, and standardized environment where data flows seamlessly, enabling all stakeholders to benefit.

Dolores Ordóñez, Director of AnySolution, coordinating the consortium, outlined the project’s ambitious goals to deploy in just 3 years a common tourism data space and pilots in 5 European regions.
Antonio Lopez de Avila from UN Tourism reminded us that data-driven solutions fuel AI, underscoring the importance of innovation to tackle the Tourism industry’s challenges.

Reflections from Mallorca: A Community in Action

Beyond the formalities, the kick-off event was a celebration of community and shared purpose. Networking sessions buzzed with energy as attendees exchanged ideas, forged new partnerships, and planned their next steps.
The spirit of collaboration was particularly evident in informal discussions, where attendees shared experiences over coffee or dinner. Many noted that being in Mallorca—a prime example of a mature destination balancing high tourist demand with sustainability goals—reinforced the urgency and relevance of DEPLOYTOUR’s mission.

Learning from Diversity

Bringing together partners from 13 countries, the kick-off meeting demonstrated the power of multinational collaboration. Each participant brought unique perspectives, reflecting their local challenges and successes. This diversity is a strength, ensuring the project’s solutions are adaptable and inclusive.

Why DEPLOYTOUR Matters

Bridging the Gap Between Data and Tourism

Tourism is a cornerstone of Europe’s economy, yet the industry often struggles with fragmented data and siloed operations. DEPLOYTOUR addresses these challenges by creating a space where stakeholders can share data in a trusted ecosystem, enabling:

Better decision-making: Accurate, real-time data empowers destinations to plan more effectively.
Enhanced visitor experiences: Personalization becomes easier with access to diverse data sets.
Increased resilience: Data helps destinations adapt to crises and changing market conditions.

Looking Ahead: A Collaborative Journey

The DEPLOYTOUR kick-off meeting was a resounding success, setting the stage for three years of collaboration and innovation. Partners left Mallorca inspired and ready to contribute to a project that promises to reshape the future of tourism in Europe.

As the project moves forward, its success will depend on the continued engagement and commitment of all stakeholders. Together, they aim to demonstrate the transformative power of shared data and position Europe as a global leader in sustainable and innovative tourism.
